Enterprise-grade Wi-Fi 6 access points can technically associate with 200+ devices, but that is a marketing spec, not a usable design number. For solid real-world performance, plan on roughly 20-30 active devices per AP for typical business use, dropping to 15-20 per AP in video-heavy or high-upload environments where application load — not device count — becomes the bottleneck.
Wi-Fi signal loses strength every time it passes through a wall or floor. Drywall partitions cause minimal loss, but concrete, cinderblock (CMU), and reinforced concrete can absorb 12-45 dB of signal depending on frequency band — enough to cut effective coverage radius roughly in half compared to an open floor plan. That's why our calculator uses a lower sq-ft-per-AP figure for masonry and multi-tenant buildings than for open offices.
In multifamily and affordable housing properties, unit-demising walls and concrete floor/ceiling assemblies — not open square footage — are the dominant factor limiting coverage. Because of this, MDU access point counts scale with the number of units and corridors rather than raw square footage, and the design also depends on whether the property wants common-area/amenity WiFi only or a contractually guaranteed in-unit connection.
Not reliably. Ceiling height, aisle length and orientation, dock-door coverage, and whether devices are handheld scanners versus forklift-mounted tablets all matter more than square footage alone in warehouses. Racked/aisle zones may need roughly one AP per aisle regardless of total footage, and spaces with ceilings over 20 feet typically require directional or high-bay antennas and a predictive survey rather than a flat sq-ft rule.
